How the math works
A 12 by 12 inch tile covers exactly 1 square foot, so an 80 square foot floor needs 80 tiles before waste. Add the 10 percent waste allowance for cuts at the edges and breakage and you get 88 tiles, which is 9 boxes of 10.
Use 10 percent for a straight grid in a rectangular room. Go to 15 percent for a diagonal layout, a herringbone pattern, or a room with a lot of corners, and keep the leftovers. A spare tile from the same batch is worth a lot the day one cracks.
