How the math works
The tip is the bill times the percentage: 20 percent of an $85.50 check is $17.10, for a $102.60 total. Split three ways, each person pays $34.20.
Twenty percent is the standard sit-down rate in most of the US. Fifteen is fair for a simple meal or takeout counter service, and 25 is the generous end for great service. Tip on the pre-tax amount if you want to be precise; most people just tip on the total.
